Why is the IPC2581 standard format is not used as exchange format, instead of EDX?
What is the difference between EDX and IPC2581? What are the EDX benefits compared with the IPC2581?
IPC2581 does not support several key functions that are were important for exchange of ECAD Data– namely adding a better security layer and adding support for process related data exchange (such as ECO’s and Part Requests).
IPC2581 is a ECAD neutral description of a PCB design, similar to ODB++, their goal is to represent the data for manufacturing but not give away the entire design IP
EDX is designed to bidirectionally exchanging library, component and design data between EDA design authoring systems and ANY related business system or process (such as PLM, PDM, ERP etc).
EDX could contain a PCB designs IPC2581 or ODB++ exports as design derived manufacturing files along with other viewables etc.
